As your preferred Lubbock Dentist, we want our clients to feel confident in their decision regarding implant dentistry; that’s why we created this guide to help you understand dental implants and the surgical process.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from biocompatible materials like titanium. Surgically placed into the jawbone, the implants will replace missing teeth while providing a stable foundation for dental prosthetics such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. With dental implants, your teeth appear natural, and your facial contours are well preserved, allowing you to smile confidently once again.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants aren’t just a solution for tooth replacement, they are a comprehensive dental solution that positively impacts your overall oral health and quality of life. Here’s a more in-depth overview of the wide range of benefits that dental implants provide you, ensuring you make an informed and confident decision.
A Natural Smile:
At Grimes Dentistry, we are equipped with an array of Nobel Biocare products to suit your needs—a single tooth, anterior, or full-jaw restoration. Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. They are made with your smile in mind by seamlessly blending in with the surrounding teeth.
Improved Eating Capabilities:
Unlike dentures, dental implants give you back the freedom to eat your favorite foods again without worrying about damage to your teeth. Securely placed into your jaw, implants enhance your ability to enjoy a wide range of foods.
Last a Lifetime:
Proper care, such as regularly scheduled dental checkups, daily brushing, and flossing, can make your dental implants last a lifetime. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to prevent peri-implant disease, gum disease, and any other complications that may affect your implant’s longevity.
Backed by Science:
Dental implants have been around for thousands of years and have evolved into the modern era of dentistry. Swedish orthopedic surgeon Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark revolutionized modern implants by creating the first titanium dental implant in the 1950s. This led to the world’s first patient to receive modern dental implants from Nobel Biocare implants in 1965. Half a century of experience and millions of patients have led to successful treatments with Nobel Biocare’s range of dental implants and solutions.
Dental Implant Procedure
Restoring your smile with Grimes Dentistry dental implants involves several steps, from the initial consultation to your new permanent teeth. This entire process usually takes six to eight months.
Ideal Candidacy:
Before we start planning your procedure, our team of experienced dentists will determine whether you’re an ideal candidate for dental implants. To be considered an ideal candidate, you should have good overall health, sufficient bone density in the jaw, and healthy gum tissue.
Initial Consultation:
Once you are considered a candidate for dental implants, our dental team will evaluate your oral health through a comprehensive dental exam and take X-rays. These X-rays will help us determine the best surgical approach and the ideal location for placing your implants. We will also then create a customized treatment plan that will take six to eight months to complete.
The Surgical Procedure:
First, we will place the implants within your jawbone. The implants will gradually bond with the jawbone for the first three to six months following this procedure. After this first surgery, you should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft foods diet. During this time, your restorative dentist designs the final bridgework, crown, or denture, which will improve both function and aesthetics. The second phase begins once the implant has bonded to the jawbone, also known as osseointegration.
Lastly, it’s time for Dr. Grimes or Dr. Mathur to uncover the implants and surgically connect posts or attachments. Impressions must also be made at this stage to make your new teeth, which will be placed over the posts or attachments.
Recovery:
Some patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild pain after each surgery, but these symptoms subside within a few days. Our team of dentists will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including guidelines on a soft foods diet, oral hygiene, and any symptoms that might occur.
Follow – Up and Long – Term Maintenace:
Dental implants, like natural teeth, require regular and thorough care, including daily brushing, flossing, and routine dental checkups. This will ensure the longevity of your implants and prevent gum disease, peri-implant disease, and more.
